From Couture to Curtains: How Fashion and Home Design Work Together

by Nikki James

Fashion and interior design have been intertwined for centuries. When it comes to which one has a greater influence on the other, there’s no clear winner — it goes both ways. Fashion and interior design work in tandem, not in opposition, so there’s never truly one “leader.”

It’s fascinating to see just how closely related these two facets are. Take this description for example: “Where old-world style never gets old. It’s about deep finishes, grand textures and textiles, and bold accessories.” Do you think this describes — an outfit or a room’s design?

Tricky, right? While this description could work for either, it’s talking about the inside of a home. More specifically, this snippet comes from our Roosevelt Collection. It continues: “All perfect backdrops for hosting a party of twelve and then napping on the couch to recover.”

So, why are fashion and interior design so similar? Both follow the five principles of design: balance, rhythm and repetition, emphasis, portion and scale, and harmony.  Take the two images below for example. A deep color provides the base for both, and a light accent gives the room and the outfit balance.

As someone who loves both fashion and interior design, I see the home through a unique lens. For instance, I think of light fixtures and hardware as the home’s jewelry! Just like actual jewelry, it’s fun to play with different sizes and finishes. The furniture, pillows, curtains, and rugs add layers of texture and style – similar to adding prints and colors to your clothes.

With Fall Fashion Weeks underway, I’m sure you’ll start to spot the similarities between fashion and interior design! I hope it will also get you thinking: how will these new trends influence our homes?
