Ashton Woods Expertise

Designer Spotlight: Karina Pruitt

Meet Karina, globetrotter, book lover and design consultant at the Ashton Woods Studio in Dallas-Fort Worth. We caught Karina between travels for an interview about where she finds inspiration, her favorite Ashton Woods home plan and her tips for interior design.

How did you get into home design?

I began my career in the homebuilding industry as a project manager and worked in that role for approximately 10 years. I loved managing every aspect of construction, so naturally, I developed a passion for all things design and began my design career with Ashton Woods.

Outside of design, what are your other hobbies and interests?

I enjoy reading, gardening and traveling the world! I make time to read every evening and enjoy a variety of genres. You’ll find me outdoors gardening in the spring and fall and I love sprucing up my flower beds with seasonal color. And of course, travel is what fuels my soul! It’s my favorite thing to do and I was fortunate to check off a bucket list trip to Italy and Switzerland last May!

Where do you find creative inspiration?

I find creative inspiration mostly from my travels. Many of the foreign countries I’ve explored provide so much architectural history, vibrant streetscapes and cultural experiences that influence my creativity in home design.

What is your favorite Ashton Woods home model and why?

My favorite Ashton Woods model home is the Haesley. I love the high ceilings throughout the home and how spacious the plan is. My favorite feature is the optional sliding doors in the family room, which blend the indoor space with the outdoor entertainment area!

How about your favorite Collection?

I’m excited that we’ve introduced color into our new Collections, so my vote goes to the Rosemary Collection. I’m loving the warmer Earth tones that this Collection offers and can’t wait to see it come to life! It reminds me of being outdoors and being one with nature.

How would you describe your own personal style?

That’s a tough one because it’s evolved over the years. However, I’d describe my current style as modern rustic with a cozy vibe. I gravitate more toward clean lines with high-contrasting colors incorporated throughout my home. Royal blue is my favorite color, so you’ll see it sprinkled into the artwork in my study and family room.

One of the most exciting parts of buying an Ashton Woods home is that homeowners get to personalize their design. What design advice do you have for buyers as they build their new home?

A key piece of advice I offer buyers is to trust your instincts and prioritize your wants and needs. Creating a mood board helps buyers visualize the important elements they want to incorporate into their home, and apps like Pinterest make this super simple to create!

What are one or two key tips you’d give Ashton Woods homeowners for decorating their new space after move-in day?

Paint is your best friend. Don’t be afraid to experiment with color, as painting an accent wall or two is a simple way to enhance a room. Creating a gallery wall is another favorite recommendation as it’s a fantastic way to showcase family photos that tell your story! It makes for great conversations.
