6 Fall Trend Forecasts from Our Interior Designers

Cooler weather, cozy sweaters and pumpkin-spiced everything mark the beginning of fall. They also mark the beginning of a new season of interior design trends.

What’s in style for fall of 2024? Our designers share their trend forecasts and how you can get in on the latest interior design looks.

Mixed Decor

Your personality has many different facets, and your home should reflect that, too. “Mixing decor styles is a great way to add character and personality to your home,” says Ashton Woods designer Camila Costa Smolensky.

“A trend I see in the fall is incorporating retro or vintage elements, such as Mid-Century furniture or antique decor,” adds designer Felipe Cerpa. If your style is mostly traditional, try adding in a piece of Mid-Century Modern furniture for contrast. Or, if sleek, contemporary design is your aesthetic, add some antique decorations to the mix, like an intricate 18th century-inspired clock. There’s room to mix and match any of your design tastes.

Luxe Touches

It may be chilly outside, but fall is all about richness and warmth. So cozy up with materials as fuzzy as they are refined — think luxe fabrics like velvet, mohair and corduroy. “These versatile materials can effectively be used in both contemporary and traditional applications,” says Ashton Woods designer Pauline Ton-Lo.

Luxury accents also provide subtle sophistication and points of interest. Choose a velvet couch to serve as the focal point of the living room, or place boucle bar stools around your island for a comfortable place to catch up.

“The presence of luxe materials in a room conveys a collected interior, which tends to be compelling,” Smolensky adds.

Wainscoted Walls

Want to add charm and character to your space? Consider an architectural element like wainscoting.

"Understated yet sophisticated aspects of Traditional Design, like wainscoting, are commonly used in spaces for intimate social gatherings,” says Ton-Lo. “In addition to creating interest, wainscoting breaks up a room visually and gives the appearance of higher ceilings."

For even more visual interest, use contrasting colors for the wainscoting and the wall. If you want to capture the spirit of fall year-round, consider warm tones like burnt orange or toasted marshmallow.

Organic Elements

Some trends never go out of fashion, and nature-inspired style is one of them.

“This season, I think we will continue to see natural materials incorporated into home designs, including stone, natural wood, leather, and handcrafted tiles,” predicts designer Blaire Woodall.

To bring the outdoors in, use warm-toned woods, leather or rattan. You can also use stone accents and tile to ground your space. “Marble, slate, and travertine-style tiles are classic and timeless,” adds Rachel Buow. Natural materials offer a soothing look year-round, whether you tile an entire space or simply add accent furniture.

Playful Wallpaper

After pared-down style had its moment in the late 2010s, it’s no surprise that maximalism is now in vogue. Mixed patterns and textures are all the rage, and what better way to get in on the trend than with wallpaper?

“In fall 2024, we’re going to see a rejection of minimalism replaced by more wallpaper and pattern mixing,” Kristina Sterchy predicts. Peel-and-stick wallpaper is a viable option for even beginner designers, and when you’re ready to update your style, it’s more easily removable than traditional wallpaper

Curves and Swerves

Add a soft touch to your home this season with rounded furniture, curved lines and organic patterns.

“Fall 2024 is all about the curves and softer shapes,” says Smolensky. These soft lines break up your line of sight to create a calming effect with contemporary cool.

To incorporate this trend into your home, choose furniture pieces with curved silhouettes, like rounded sofas or desks. Accent pieces like wavy mirror frames and artwork are other great ways to bring organic shapes into your space.
